The goal of asymptomatic (symptom-free) adults’ periodic screening is to prevent morbidity and mortality by identifying risk factors, early clinical signs, and symptoms of treatable disease. Periodic screening has been a fundamental medical practice for decades and is one of the most common reasons for medical visits.

When it comes to how frequently the screening should be performed, most medical associations recommend an annual screening. However, the American Medical Association (AMA), as well as other authoritative medical organizations, have recently begun recommending less frequent screening intervals based on age. Thus, the recommendation for regular checkups in healthy adults is:

Every 5 years for ages 19-40

Every 1-3 years for ages 40-65.

Every 1 year for ages over the age of 65

Most people under the age of 40 are free of conditions that could be diagnosed solely through clinical medical examination. In this age group, health problems manifest with specific symptoms, prompting the patient to seek medical attention. Preventive examinations should be monitored in the following areas:

Cancer (colon, prostate, breast, cervix) is directly related to age and other factors unique to each individual.

Cardiovascular problems

The respiratory system (related to age and whether someone is a smoker)

Laboratory Tests: There are no recommendations for which paraclinical tests should be included in a checkup. However, it should include all tests that will reliably check the overall state of health, particularly vital organs. Among these are:

General blood: checks for hematological disorders such as anemia, white blood cell (immune system) and platelet disorders (blood clotting)

erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ERV)

Sugar (check for diabetes)

Creatinine and Urea (renal function check)

Transaminases (GT) (check liver function)

Triglycerides, HDL, LDL, and cholesterol (lipid profile check)

Uric acid (control of hyperuricemia)

PSA-Prostate Specific Antigen (annual check of the prostate gland in men over the age of 50)

Urinalysis in general (checking for diseases of the urinary system)

Electrocardiogram (rough check of heart function)

Mammogram (annual screening for breast malignancy in women)

Pap test (annual screening for cervical malignancy in women).

A preventive check-up aids in the early detection of serious diseases, and it is estimated that a systematic check-up can save up to 5 years of life.
